My father was a toddler when Adolf Hitler was elected chancellor in a democratic Germany, and by the time he entered first grade, the world around him had changed beyond recognition. It was only because Americans fought and died that he got to live, finish school, and become a journalist. I’ve thought about him often these past four years as people far more qualified than I argued that America is, or isn’t, going down the path of Weimar. I don’t know the answer to that. But what seems clear is that we are, as Germans were then, at some kind of precipice. read
