Reports started emerging of protests against the government because of a plane to privatise land in order to extend the capital city of Addis Ababa into Oromia. The Oromo people say it will lead to farm evictions, and threaten their culture. Human Rights Watch reports that more than 400 people have been killed since protests started in November 2015. The deaths and detentions led to some activists shaving their heads, while the government says peace is being maintained and refuses independent observers. In October 2016. during a religious festival, police reportedly opened fire on festival-goers, sparking a stampede. Some say more than 50 people were killed – others report more than 500. The protests continue.
